Chitosan for Cattle and Poultry. (Chitosan as a growth enhancer in poultry)
Chitosan is a highly safe biopolymer which is applied in agriculture in many ways. One of these is using chitosan as a growth enhancer in poultry. There is an apparent result in increasing average growth rate and decreasing death rate in chicken.
The different results of using chitosan in chicken come from comparing 2 groups of chicken. One group consumes normal feed and another group consumes feed coated by chitosan liquid (300 PPM). The result shows that chicken consuming chitosan have total highest body weight at 4.143 kg., average daily growth rate (ADG) at 48.22 grams per chicken per day and FCR at 1.85 which is decreasing compared to another group. On the other hand, chicken consuming normal feed have total body weight at 3.505 kg., average daily growth rate at 41.56 grams per chicken per day and FCR rate at 2.07.
The death rate for group of chicken consuming chitosan is 4.56% whereas another group is 6.32% There is another test in group of chicken consuming feed with chitosan at lower proportion (200 PPM). The result shows value numbers in between group of using chitosan (300 PPM) and group of not using chitosan. In additions, group of chicken using chitosan has apparently lower expenditure of vaccine compared to the expenditure of group not using chitosan.
